Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital to sponsor Girlology and Guyology

April 10, 2017

Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital is sponsoring Girlology, “Something New About You,” for fourth and fifth grade girls from 1-3 p.m. and “Reproduction,” for fifth and sixth grade girls from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Sunday, May 7.

For boys and their parents, Guyology offers “Just the Facts,” for fourth and fifth grade boys from 1-3 p.m. and “Reproduction,” for fifth and sixth grade boys from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, June 4.

The forums for children and their parents explore questions and issues about sexual development and maturity in a fun and engaging way. Cost for one child and one parent is $40. The discounted rate is made possible through the support of Children’s Hospital. Each child will be given a book and goody bag.

Girlology and Guyology are physician-developed, physician-led programs that have been shared at hospitals, schools, churches and private homes nationwide with more than 5,000 pairs of children and parents over the past 13 years. The forums will be led by pediatrician and Girlology and Guyology co-founder, Trish Hutchison, M.D., and pediatrician and Girlologist, Laura Ledlie, M.D.

“Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital is very pleased to be able to present this opportunity for the girls and guys in our community,” said Diane Bagnal-Moody, administrative director of Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital. “We feel that the information our children receive needs to be accurate and provided in such a way that they will learn what is necessary, and we feel that this Girlology/Guyology program does that.”

“Our participation has increased immensely since we first began offering the program in the fall of 2015. That’s why we are presenting the events on two separate dates now. The Girlology forums are May 7 and the Guyology forums are June 4,” said Bagnal-Moody.

Girls and boys today are facing puberty at younger ages while they’re also exposed to sexualized images and messages earlier due to media and the internet. Additionally, sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy still occur at a much higher rate in the U.S. than other developed countries. One factor is that American parents still aren’t comfortable talking about adolescent sexual development and sexuality with their children. In the digital age, parents and children need to have honest, timely and confident conversations about sexual development.

Girlology and Guyology forums are held at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, 7 Medical Park Dr. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Learn more or register at www.girlology.com.

About Girlology and Guyology

Girlology and Guyology provide medically accurate, age-appropriate sexuality education for kids and parents delivered with candor, wit and sometimes a little sassiness. Girlology and Guyology are physician-developed and physician-led programs that are expanding into new markets. Since 2003, Girlology has been helping parents and kids have conversations that matter – from the body changes of puberty to “the talk” and more. These conversations create a foundation to help keep the lines of communication open between parents and kids as adolescents grow into young adults.
