Palmetto Trail Work Days
November 13, 2011Trail Work Days
The Palmetto Trail exist because of the efforts and time of volunteers. As we continue forward to complete the 425 miles of trail, we are also staying focused on maintaining and improving the passages already complete. Trail Workdays are essential in this process, also allowing participants to take ownership and build friendships while making a difference. Thank you for your time and your efforts.

REI Service Project
Hospital Rock Trail in Jones Gap State Park
Time: 8:30am
Meet at Jones Gap State Park. Since parking is at a premium at the Park, we encourage carpooling when feasible. Volunteers will meet at the gate and park as directed at the maintenance area. We will return to our vehicles by 3:00pm. This work day will begin with an uphill hike of approximately one mile to the work site. It is a scenic hike passing a newly accessed waterfall and passing Hospital Rock itself. The work itself will consist of building new trail around a series of very nasty switchbacks and severely eroded existing trail. The object is to improve grades and the overall hiking experience on this trail. The work includes the use of heavy, sharp tools (Pulaskis, fire rakes, McLeods, saws, etc.), so there will be a safety briefing before any work begins. Given the type of tools, we will need any youth volunteers to be accompanied by an adult responsible for their behavior and safety. We have always been able to find safe activities such as pruning roots, etc. for the younger kids. Volunteers should bring lunch and water. They should wear hiking boots and bring hat, rain gear, and work gloves. We will have a first aid kit, but participants should bring a small kit with Band Aids, aspirin and any personal medicines. To sign up for this workday or for more details, please contact Jim Majors [email protected] (864)233-7576.
