Pelion Middle School Principal Jowers Announces Retirement

LEXINGTON, SC — Lexington County School District One Superintendent Karen Woodward announced that Pelion Middle School Principal Sandra “Sandy” M. Jowers, Ph.D. plans to retire effective June 30, 2014.

Woodward said, “We appreciate the leadership that Dr. Jowers has provided to Pelion Middle School over the last eight years. She has seen many things accomplished during her tenure including, most recently, the opening of the Pelion Performing Arts Center. She cares for the students and for the Pelion community and that shows in her work. We wish Dr. Jowers all the best as she makes this change.”

Jowers has 35 years of education experience. She began her career as a seventh- through 12th-grade French and language arts teacher at Olanta High School in Florence County School District 3 in 1979.

In 1980, she moved to Swansea High in Lexington School District Four, where she taught English for more than 10 years. In 1992, she took a job at Airport High in Lexington School District Two teaching English. While there, she held the dual role of teacher and administrative assistant from 1995–1998.

Jowers joined Lexington One in 1998 as assistant principal at Pelion High. She was promoted to principal at Pelion Middle School in 2006

She received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Francis Marion and a Master of Education in educational administration, an Educational Specialist in Educational Administration, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration from the University of South Carolina.

She is a member of the South Carolina Association for School Administrators and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
