Piedmont Natural Gas Supports Science and Mathematics Governor’s School’s Summer Program in Spartanburg

June 5, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC – The Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is pleased to announce Piedmont Natural Gas has contributed $5,000 in support of iTEAMS Spartanburg, GSSM’s four-day technology, computer science and innovation camp for rising 7th and 8th graders, held in 10 counties across the state. GSSM will be hosting iTEAMS at no cost to campers at Carver Middle School from July 7-10, 2014.

iTEAMS is a day camp geared to inspire students to pursue careers in the fields of computer science, technology and entrepreneurship through hands-on, team-based projects. During iTEAMS, students select from one of the following challenges: developing mobile apps using App Inventor, designing video games using Alice 3D software, or creating an interactive object using the MaKey MaKey invention kit.

Piedmont Natural Gas serves more than 1 million residential and business customers across North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation was formed in 2004 to support nonprofit organizations in communities throughout their service territory. Since its beginning, the Foundation has invested more than $6 million in the communities they serve.

Piedmont Natural Gas Community Relations Manager Michael Durham said, “Improving education through programs like iTEAMS is essential to the future of our economy and our nation as a whole. Piedmont Natural Gas remains committed to STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math) and we are grateful for the opportunity to support a program that will provide enriching educational experiences for so many students across the state of South Carolina.”

“We are grateful to Piedmont Natural Gas for helping us bring iTEAMS to Spartanburg County students,” says Kim Bowman, CEO, GSSM Foundation. “We hope this camp inspires the middle school students in this area to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math, all while having a great summer experience.”
