Power of One Underscored in Newest Exhibit at Upcountry History Museum

April 4, 2018

Anne Frank. Ruby Bridges. Ryan White. More than just familiar names, their stories of courage, resilience and endurance embody the message of The Power of Children – Making a Difference, the newest exhibition at the Upcountry History Museum-Furman University, a Smithsonian Affiliate, opening Saturday, April 7, 2018, and on display through Wednesday, May 23, 2018.

Whether it was Frank chronicling her years in hiding during the Holocaust; Bridges enduring uninhibited racism just trying to attend school; or White bravely facing taunts and cruelty while fighting AIDS, each of these children demonstrated the power that a single voice can have in overcoming extreme hatred, prejudice and discrimination.

Designed to guide visitors on an immersive journey through the lives of these three young people, this major exhibition from the National Endowment for the Humanities takes visitors into the spaces where each child felt safe: the Secret Annex where Frank and her family spent two years in hiding; the first-grade classroom in which Bridges spent an enter school year alone with her teacher, Mrs. Henry; and White’s bedroom, filled with the things he treasured.

Delving into the lives of these three through audiovisual presentations, original artifacts and hands-on interactive activities, “The Power of Children” diligently intertwines the past with the present as it encourages children and adults to explore issues of isolation, fear and prejudice throughout 20th century history and today while reflecting on how they can find ways to make a positive difference.

In addition, the Museum will feature special lectures, films, programs and events that support and enhance learning experiences relative to the challenges underscored in the content of this exhibition, as well as in today’s world.

The Upcountry History Museum is located at 540 Buncombe St., in Greenville, S.C. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Sunday from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. For more information, call 864-467-3100 or visit www.upcountryhistory.org.
