Providence Health appoints new Board

COLUMBIA, SC – Providence Health recently appointed a new Board of Trustees. Susie H. VanHuss, PhD will serve as the chairperson of the board and Thomas “Neil” McLean, Jr. will serve as vice chairperson.

Susie H. VanHuss, PhD – Chair

Susie H. VanHuss is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Management in the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. She served as executive director of USC Foundations for nine years. Previously she was professor and head of the Management Department in the Moore School of Business. She served as interim dean of the Moore School of Business for 15 months. She also served as president and CEO of the Central Carolina Community Foundation for 15 months. She received her MBA and PhD degrees from Indiana University. She is a prolific author for Cengage Learning Publishing Company and has served on five for-profit and twenty non-profit Boards of Trustees/ Directors.  In addition to her role on the Providence Health Board, Susie serves as the President of University Associates, Secretary/Treasurer of the USC Development Foundation, and a member of the USC President’s Athletics Advisory Group. She was the University of South Carolina faculty athletics representative to the Southeastern Conference and the National Collegiate Athletics Association for nine years. Susie is a frequent speaker at state, regional, and national business education conventions. She has done extensive consulting and training for industry and education groups in 48 states, six provinces of Canada, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.

Thomas “Neil” McLean, Jr – Vice Chair

Neil McLean is CEO and Managing Partner for Sagacious Partners.  Sagacious Partners is a Columbia, SC-based executive coaching, economic development and project management firm dedicated to helping companies and communities grow. McLean also serves as a Vistage Chair and Professional EOS Implementer. In his role as an executive coach, McLean serves more than 20 CEO’s and leadership teams in South Carolina.    His firm also provides project management services to EngenuitySC, the SC Council on Competitiveness and involves participants from the private sector, universities, and regional and statewide economic development organizations. McLean received his BS-Engineering and MBA from the University of South Carolina. Neil serves as Vice Chair for Providence Health and was named to Columbia Business Monthly’s “50 Most Influential” in 2011 and 2012.

Jeannette Andrews, PhD, RN, FAAN

Dr. Jeannette Andrews is the 7th Dean of the University of South Carolina College of Nursing. Prior to coming to USC in January 2013, she served as the Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Center for Community Health Partnerships at the Medical University of South Carolina from 2007-2012. As an alumna from the USC PhD program (2004), Dr. Andrews has achieved continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health-funded investigator for community trials targeting cardiovascular risk reduction and tobacco control since 2001. She has authored over 200 publications and abstracts, has served as a national consultant and contributed to multiple national task groups related to health and nursing. Dr. Andrews is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, a Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Executive Fellow, and an AACN-Wharton Executive Fellow. Clinically, Dr. Andrews is a family nurse practitioner, and has a 30 year history in nursing, working in multiple areas, including medical surgical units, intensive care units, and primary care. Selected awards include South Carolina Health Care Hero Award, Palmetto Gold Award, NPACE National Nurse Practitioner Award, Veterans Administration National Professional Nurse Award, and Nurse of the Year, Georgia Nurses Association.  Dr. Andrews received her PhD in Nursing Science from the University of South Carolina (2004), Masters in Nursing with a Family Nurse Practitioner specialty from Georgia Southern University (1996), and her Bachelor’s in Nursing Science from the Medical College of Georgia (1986).

Daniel Pinckney Bouknight, MD, FACC

Dr. Bouknight received his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine here in Columbia, SC, after receiving a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Furman University in Greenville, SC.  He was the Chief Resident in internal medicine at University of South Carolina School of Medicine where he also completed his internship in the same field. He completed a fellowship in cardiology and a fellowship in interventional cardiology at University of Texas Health Sciences Center. Dr. Bouknight is board certified in interventional cardiology, cardiovascular disease, and internal medicine. His professional affiliations include the Medical Journal Club of South Carolina, American Medical Association, American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, American Society of Echocardiography, and the Columbia Medical Society. From 2003 to 2005 he served as the Chief of Cardiology at Providence Hospital, where he has also served as Chief of Staff.

Scott Campbell, MHA, Market Chief Executive Officer

Scott Campbell is a healthcare veteran who has held hospital executive leadership positions for more than 30 years. Before joining LifePoint Health in the summer 2015, Mr. Campbell was Market Chief Executive Officer for Physicians Regional Healthcare System. He has held various leadership positions at Health Management Associates, a publicly-traded Fortune 500 operator of general acute care hospitals, including terms as Chief Executive Officer for several affiliated hospitals. His experience includes leading the transition of a large Catholic hospital to an investor-owned system, where he successfully preserved and built upon the faith-based culture that the hospital had fostered for100 years. Mr. Campbell received his Master of Health Administration from Medical College of VA/Virginia Commonwealth University and is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He has been recognized multiple times as both CEO of the Year and winner of the Chairman’s Challenge Award for top hospital financial performance at HMA.

Jill R. Davis

Ms. Jill R. Davis has been Vice President of Corporate Planning and Strategic Services of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, Inc. since 2007 where she leads a team of 40 Analysts and Consultants who support the operational objectives of the corporation through planning, strategy, analytics and process improvement.  Ms. Davis joined BlueCross BlueShield in 1996 in the Information Systems department, where she oversaw long-range systems development projects as a Project Lead.  In 1999, Ms. Davis joined Blue Cross’ Corporate Executive area as Special Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer, where she assumed administrative, analytical and managerial duties in support of the Chief Executive Officer’s office. Her previous employers include Philip Morris USA, Spectrum Consulting Group, and Dow Jones & Company Inc. Ms. Davis holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Rutgers University and a master’s in business administration from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business.

Dr. Michael Foster

Dr. Foster has participated in over fifty-three documented clinical investigations in his 36 years of cardiovascular medicine practice. Dr. Foster served as the chief of the Department of Cardiology, director of Cardiac Rehabilitation, and Medical Director of Cardiovascular Services at Providence, as well as president of the South Carolina Heart Center. He also served as a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Other leadership roles include team cardiologist for the TAVR program at Providence Hospitals, serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the South Carolina Chapter of the American College of Cardiology and serves on the National Board of the Cardiology Advocacy Alliance. Dr. Foster received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and internship at Boston University Affiliated Hospitals. He completed residencies at Indiana University Medical Center, University Hospital, and completed his fellowship in cardiology at Tufts University School of Medicine and Boston Veterans Administration Medical Center.

J.R. Green, PhD

Dr. J.R. Green currently serves as the Superintendent of Schools for the Fairfield County School system.  Prior to this assignment he held the position of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum @ Instruction with the Chesterfield County School District.  He also served as principal of the Palmetto Gold Award winning Central High School in Pageland South Carolina from 2004-2008.

Frederic Smith, MD

Dr. Smith practices at Providence Columbia Medical Associates. He has been an internist for over 20 years. Dr. Smith earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Carolina, and completed his residency at Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia, SC. Board certified in internal medicine, he is a flight surgeon with the 169th fighter wing at McEntire Air National Guard here in Eastover, SC. In addition, Dr. Smith is an Eagle Scout and a graduate of the Citadel in Charleston, SC. Dr. Smith enjoys all outdoor activities, especially fly fishing for trout in mountain streams.

John P. Sutton, III, MD

John P. Sutton, III, M.D. is a cardiothoracic surgeon at Providence Health since 1997, where he is the Chief of Staff. His training included a general surgery residency at the University of South Alabama, a research fellowship at the National Heart & Lung Institute in London, England, and a Cardiothoracic Surgical Residency in Charleston, SC. Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) is among the many procedures Dr. Sutton has been a part of bringing to Providence Health. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Society and the South Carolina Medical Association.
