Question of the Week: What’s something you are willing to do without right now?

With the beginning of Lent many people are considering things that they can temporarily live without, but this lesson is one that anyone can benefit from. By figuring out what we can live without, we are able to gain perspective on our wants versus our needs.

What can you live without? For me, it might be the morning coffee runs to Starbucks; for my husband, it might be the deluxe cable package. What’s on your list? How much would you or your family save if you gave up something you could do without? What could you do with the money that you save each week or each month? Consider putting that money aside  for your favorite charity and then make a special donation as a family.

As spring is right around the corner, now is the time to clean out your closet or garage and see what items you have outgrown or no longer use. You or your family will probably not miss these items, but they can be a blessing for others. Several local organizations accept clothing and household donations including the Salvation Army, Goodwill, the Cooperative Ministry and His House.

Perhaps you have an old bridesmaid gown or prom dress you are willing to part with. The Cinderella Project accepts formal gowns, handbags and accessories for girls who are financially unable to purchase these items for the prom.

title=In addition to physical items you can do without, you can also consider how you spend your time. Maybe you decide to cut out TV during a few evenings each week to spend time together as a family. You could have a family game night, get some exercise by going for a walk in your favorite park or around your neighborhood, or volunteer together as a family.

What’s something you’re willing to do without right now? Talk with your family about some of the excess things in their lives. What could your family do with the money that you save? Help your children appreciate all of the blessings in their lives with the Question of the Week!

Use the Question of the Week to spark conversation with your children about family, money, giving and help them explore what matters most to them.
