Rainy Day Rules – It’s Not Just About Staying Dry

Spring days often bring rain, but with fluctuating temperatures dressing can prove quite challenging.

While some rules are universal there are quite a few differences between dressing for warm rainy days than dressing for cool rainy days. Traditional rain gear by design keeps water out, but that means it also keeps heat in, making them great for cooler days, but rather uncomfortable on warmer ones. Here is a look at traditional and non-traditional rainy-day-wear that will keep you dry and comfortable no matter the temperature:

1.    Classic Trench. A staple on every ‘must have’ list of closet items, the trench coat can be practical and stylish if you choose the right one. Since this is a very specialized piece that you probably won’t wear often, making a smart investment is crucial. Look for a transitional coat that has a removable lining. This will offer you both warm and cool weather options. If your style is classic opt for a traditional neutral color like khaki, black or navy, but if you’re more bold in your style a bright color will keep your style alive even with a classic piece.

2.    Shoes. Traditional rain boots may serve a very real purpose of keeping your feet dry, but they aren’t always the most attractive, stylish or comfortable to wear. Plus on a warm day the idea of wearing rubber shoes is anything but appealing.   The best alternative is treated leather. They will keep the water out just as well and you won’t have to carry a separate pair of shoes to wear indoors. Another casual option would be a pair of boat shoes because they are designed to get wet

3.    Pants. Rainy days are the perfect time to wear ankle pants. Walking, or running through puddles may splash but at least you won’t be dragging your pants through the slug. Not only is a debris-ridden hemline unattractive; it’s damaging to your pants. If you aren’t a fan of cropped pants, at least consider rolling up your pant legs while you’re outside.

4.    Thin layers. Whether you’re dressing for cool days or warm days anytime you’re dealing with rain lighter layers are better for one simple fact: they dry quicker. I wear jeans just about every day, but when they get wet they are miserable to wear and take forever to dry.

April showers may bring May flowers, but they also bring frustration when deciding what to wear.   Some rules on staying dry are ubiquitous, like carrying an umbrella, but others are not. You have to make different choices whether you’re trying to stay warm or cool along with dry.
