Read to succeed summer reading camp symposium

February 6, 2017
Armed with the intention of leaders making readers, Richland Library is partnering with the South Carolina Department of Education and several other organizations to host the Read to Succeed Summer Reading Camp Symposium from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Friday, February 10 at the Richland Two Institute of Innovation (R2i2), located at 763 Fashion Drive.

Each school district across the state is invited to bring up to four team members to this free day of learning, sharing and developing. The symposium is focusing on the best practices for the South Carolina Read to Succeed Summer Reading Camps with topics ranging from parent engagement to creative staffing.

“Public libraries are committed to making sure every child in South Carolina has access to the help and resources that they need to be strong readers,” said Richland Library Executive Director Melanie Huggins. “Read to Succeed Summer Reading Camps will be their most successful when we convene the right partners, focus on outcomes for kids and families, and continually evaluate our collective efforts.”

In an attempt to improve statewide literacy rates among children, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley signed Act 284 (Read to Succeed) into law back in June 2014. One of the pieces instructs school districts to analyze third graders who are not performing at their specified reading level and offering them the chance to attend a summer reading camp.

“A student’s reading ability is the greatest predictor of educational and lifelong success,” said South Carolina Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman. “As educators, we must work closely with parents and our community partners to support our struggling readers and give them the tools and resources needed to be successful. Our summer reading camps are a critical piece in this effort, and I look forward to discussing how we can strengthen and grow this important program.”

Hosting the Read to Succeed Summer Reading Camp Symposium would not be possible without our other partners, including:

  • SC Education Oversight Committee
  • SC Afterschool Alliance
  • SC State Library
  • Liberty Fellows Class of 2017
  • booksource
  • Follett
  • Scholastic
  • The Reading Warehouse
