Reading, recipes, and tasting – all part of a grant from Dollar General Literacy Foundation

June 22, 2016

SPARTANBURG, SC – Thunder Cake will be the focus of a unique reading program during summer camps at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind June 19-25.

Made possible by a $3,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support summer literacy, the program at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind will feature the book Thunder Cake in print, braille, and large print. Students will read the book and then use the recipe in the back to make and taste a thunder cake.

What’s a thunder cake? We don’t want to spoil the surprise, but here’s a hint. It has to do with grandma making a cake just before a storm begins.

deaf1The Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant will also enable the school library to add a collection of books with recipes in them.  “The books will encourage students to have fun reading, develop independent living skills, and increase their reading skills,” said Galena Gaw, director of library services.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded the grant to the school’s fundraising arm, The Walker Foundation. This local grant is part of more than $7.1 million in grants awarded to more than 900 schools, nonprofits, and organizations across 43 states that Dollar General serves.

“Consistent with our mission of Serving Others, we are excited to provide these organizations with funding to further literacy and education across the communities we call home,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s CEO.  “It is always so exciting to see the true and meaningful impact the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has on both children and adults looking to improve their lives through literacy.”

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education.
