Remembering Columbia lecture series and book signing explores Columbia’s past

COLUMBIA, SC – Historic Columbia announces the release of the new book, Remembering Columbia,with a four-part lecture series and book signings on Tuesdays, September 1, 8, 22, and 29, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. each evening at the Robert Mills Carriage House.
Combining new research with historic images of Columbia, HC’s Director of Cultural Resources John Sherrer leads participants through conversations and activities that explore the city’s past. Learn about the events, places and people that have shaped our community’s history through these featured photographs, many of which have never been seen by the public before this lecture series.
“Remembering Columbia is both the culmination of over 15 years of research and a springboard for future discoveries about South Carolina’s capital city,” says Sherrer. “Drawn from a host of public, private and institutional collections, its photographs reveal a city both familiar and foreign—the product of almost two centuries of evolution captured in images that span from the 1820s through the late 1970s. It was a joy to assemble, and I hope citizens and visitors will find it a compelling visual journey.”
Remembering Columbia is a visual road map that merges images with accounts of people, sites, and events pulled from historical newspapers, diaries and ephemera. Building upon the efforts of previous generations, this account explores South Carolina’s capital city from its early years through the mid-20th century in ways previously underdeveloped or altogether unrepresented. The result is an intriguing detective story that will be enriching, surprising and compelling to life-long residents, newcomers and visitors alike.
A book signing follows each lecture. This is the first opportunity for anyone to receive a copy (and have it signed!) of Remembering Columbia, to be released by Arcadia Publishing this September.

In November 1961, a small group of individuals intent on saving the Ainsley Hall House from demolition officially incorporated as the Historic Columbia Foundation.
