Richland County First to grant tax extension in wake of natural disaster

COLUMBIA, SC – Today, Richland County announced that the South Carolina Department of Revenue approved its plan to extend property tax payment deadlines (for non-vehicle taxes) an additional 30 days. The plan to delay the mailing of tax bills by Auditor Paul Brawley, and to delay the additional penalties by Treasurer David Adams, was unanimously supported by Richland County Council on Monday, Oct. 12.
The Treasurer and Auditor were notified by mail from Revenue Department Director Rick Reames that the plan was approved.
For Richland County citizens this means that tax bills will not go out until November and penalties normally imposed on Jan. 16 will not be added to tax bills until Feb. 17, 2016. This applies to tax bills for real estate property, business personal property, manufacturing properties, and boats and motors that are normally billed and collected at the turn of each year.
“There are folks who may have planned to pay for their taxes, and now they’re out of pocket for a large expense due to an act of God,” Adams said. “This isn’t something that really makes up for these folks that have lost so much, but hopefully it helps.”
