Columbia High School Student Accepted at Prestigious University

Bailee Sharpe, a senior at Columbia High School, has been accepted to attend Harvard University this fall. In addition to being an AP Scholar, Bailey is a member of the National Honor Society and plays the viola on the district Honors Orchestra. She earned outstanding marks on her AP classes in U.S. History, English language and composition and calculus. Bailey is thrilled but admits to being a little scared about leaving South Carolina for her exciting new opportunity at Harvard, where she plans to major in computer science. She says, “I’m adventurous, but excited to see places other than here because I’ve been here my entire life.”

 

C.A. Johnson High School Joins the TransformSC Statewide Network

C.A. Johnson High School has been accepted to join the TransformSC statewide network of innovative schools. TransformSC is an initiative of the South Carolina Council on Competitiveness. TransformSC schools receive a variety of opportunities and advantages including access to national experts and mentorships. To be accepted into the network, schools have to submit a three-year innovation plan, commit to creating a culture of innovation and implement various creative practices. The network’s goal is to transform learning and teaching for every student and every teacher in every classroom every day.

 

Dreher High School: SC Bar’s High School Teacher of the Year

Robert Lominack, a Dreher High School Latin teacher and coach of the school’s Mock Trial team, has been named the 2017 High School Teacher of the Year by the South Carolina Bar’s Law Related Education Division. Mr. Lominack was recognized for his “ability to instill the values of our legal and judicial system in his students.” He also was presented with a generous check for $1,000.

 

Hand Middle School Latin Club

The Hand Middle School Latin Club won two first-place awards in the 2016-2017 South Carolina Junior Classical League Forum held recently at Trinity-Byrnes Collegiate School in Darlington. They won top honors overall in the middle school category and in Academic Latin.

 

Alcorn Middle School Wins CO2 Dragster Competition

Alcorn Middle School’s pre-engineering students won first place overall and best car design in Richland One’s CO2 Dragster Middle School Competition. Students designed and raced virtual dragsters, then created their vehicles using balsa or basswood.
