Richland One announces new principals

COLUMBIA, SC – New principals will greet students, faculty and staff at seven Richland One schools when the 2017-2018 school year begins in August.

The Richland One Board of School Commissioners unanimously approved the appointments and assignments at its May 23 meeting.

“Strong leadership is essential to the success of our schools, and we are excited about the experience, enthusiasm and commitment to creating extraordinary learning opportunities and outcomes for students that these educators will bring to their school communities,” said Richland One Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon.

The following principal appointments and assignments are effective July 3:

  • Monica Owens Carter, principal at Gadsden Elementary School, will be the new principal at H.B. Rhame Elementary School.
  • David Thorpe, an assistant principal at Horrell Hill Elementary School, will be the acting principal at Gadsden Elementary School.
  • Vondre’ Whaley, an assistant principal at Eau Claire High School, will be the acting principal at W.J. Keenan High School.
  • Carla Mathis, an assistant principal at Lower Richland High School, will be the acting principal at Alcorn Middle School. 
  • Winifred “Winnie” Johnson, head of school at East Point Academy in West Columbia, will be the new principal at Forest Heights Elementary School.
  • Sommer Jones, an assistant principal/testing coordinator at Banks Trail Middle School in Fort Mill, will be the acting principal at Webber Elementary School.
  • Robin Hardy, principal at Fairfield Middle School in the Fairfield County School District, will be the acting principal at Hand Middle School.
