Richland One Salutes District’s 4,500+ Volunteers

Age is just a number for 91-year-old Logan Elementary School volunteer Virginia Mathis. For more than 20 years, she has been helping Logan students become better readers and learners. The school will honor her and its other volunteers at a special school reception Tuesday, April 14 from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

In observance of National Volunteer Week (April 12-18), Richland One salutes and expresses its gratitude to Mrs. Mathis and the district’s 4,500 other volunteers who donated more than 210,647 hours of service to our schools last year, time worth approximately $5 million.

Every week busy parents, college students, members of civic organizations, business executives, retirees and other volunteers help tutor students, share meals and build friendships that encourage our students to excel academically, emotionally and personally.

Katy Watkins, a certified volunteer administrator who serves as Richland One’s volunteer and mentoring programs coordinator, appreciates each volunteer’s efforts to help students be successful.

“Richland One is fortunate to have a diverse group of volunteers,” said Watkins. “All of our volunteers are important because they become student champions and help students find and support their passions in life. Research proves that students who can identify their dreams and have three champions (family, school and community) supporting them are likely to achieve their potential and dreams.”
