May 10, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC — Richland Two has named Linda Whitcomb, Spanish and World Cultures teacher at Muller Road Middle School, as the district’s 2015—2016 Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made at the completion of the 2014–2015 Teacher of the Year Celebration Gala, held Thursday, May 7 and was streamed live via the Internet.

Whitcomb has 19 years of teaching experience, with three years in Richland Two. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Furman University and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Winthrop University. She is a National Board Certified Teacher through the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards.

As District Teacher of the Year, Whitcomb will continue to encourage her students and all those around her to embrace culture, travel and to never be afraid to experience cultures different than their own.

“My goal is to use all my own experiences, previous and ongoing, to relate the wonders of this world to all my students, creating not only culturally tolerant, but inquisitive and inspired young adults,” says Whitcomb.

The five finalists for the award were selected from a pool of 31 teachers of the year, one from each school in the district. The district winner was chosen after each of the finalists was observed in their classrooms and interviewed by a selection committee composed of parents, students, community members and former teachers of the year.
