SAMS Club recognizes Burns Elementary teachers with surprise thank you event

CHARLESTON, SC – Teachers at Edmund A. Burns Elementary School headed to media center Wednesday thinking they were about to have a meeting with the principal. What they didn’t know was that volunteers from SAMS Club were waiting to recognize the teachers and staff for their dedication to their students and local community.

SAMS Club gave away $1,000 worth of gift cards to the teachers as a way to say thank you and to help cover the cost of school supplies that teachers often pay for out of their own pocket. “They give so much to this community that we wanted to give back to them,” said Velma Ray, one of the community service volunteers from SAMS Club.

“To see someone recognize us like this is a huge blessing and very generous,” said first-year teacher Moshawnna Wyche.

The Charleston County School District is proud to have the support of local community partners like SAMS Club that recognize the important role teachers play in the community.

“Our teachers and staff work hard every day to make sure that our children are getting what they need to be successful,” said Lynn Owings, principal at Burns. “Having someone from the community-at-large come in and recognize the investment we have in our students will stay with us for a very long time.”
