SPARTANBURG, SC – There is a new leadership team at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind. Kristin Milner and Christine Kincheloe have been named to head the school’s academic program for students who are deaf.

Milner will serve as principal of the School for the Deaf and Kincheloe will serve as lead teacher.

“This is a dream come true for me,” said Milner. “I began learning sign language as a teenager and soon after began planning a career in deaf education. I was excited to be hired by the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind as a teacher nine years ago, and now I’m ecstatic to be named principal.”

“I want to provide every opportunity for our students to achieve maximum success,” Milner continued. “And, with the support of lead teacher Christine Kincheloe, I believe the possibilities for our students are unlimited.”

Milner and Kincheloe served in interim capacities over the last school year. During the year, they teamed up with staff members to provide more student support through reading groups, instructional help, and positive behavior incentives. They also provided more support to the educational staff and worked with them to develop plans addressing the specific needs of each student.

During her twelve years as a teacher and administrator, Milner taught at Beaufort Elementary School, Starr-Iva Middle School, and the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind. Her experience at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind includes serving as a teacher, coordinator of instruction, lead teacher, and interim principal.

Milner holds two master’s degrees: one in education administration from the University of Phoenix and one in elementary education from Clemson University.  Her bachelor’s degree in deaf education is from Converse College. She is certified as an assessor by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Kincheloe, Christine178Kincheloe came to the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind in 1995 as a preschool assistant. Since that time she has taught elementary school and 10 different subjects, in addition to serving as interim lead teacher. She holds a bachelor’s degree in deaf education from Lenoir-Rhyne College and a master’s degree in education, administration, and supervision from Converse College. She serves as secretary of the Spartanburg Association of the Deaf.

The SC School for the Deaf and the Blind is the state’s only specialized school for students who are deaf or blind. It offers pre K-12 educational programs on its main campus in Spartanburg and specialized vision and hearing services in school districts and homes throughout the state.
