SPARTANBURG, SC – January 31, 2011 – Three members of Spartanburg Community College’s faculty and staff have been named the College’s recipients of the South Carolina Technical Education Association’s (SCTEA) Educator of the Year awards. Each year, SCC’s faculty and staff submit nominations of colleagues who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence and dedication to the College.

The following recipients were chosen for faculty, staff and administrator categories:

“These outstanding individuals have made great contributions to SCC,” said Dr. Para M. Jones, SCC president. “It’s people like Pam, Peter and Karyn who help to uphold the College’s standards of excellence, in and out of the classroom. We are grateful for their continuous commitment to education, their dedication to SCC students and the shining examples they set for others at SCC and in our community.”

Dr. Pam Hagan, SCC’s dean of instruction for Academic Affairs, was chosen for the administrator category. Dr. Hagan’s nominator wrote, ”Pam has done a tremendous job leading the College’s business and industrial divisions.  She is always willing to help out with any issues that arise, and is able to answer or find an answer to questions and/or concerns.  Pam brings with her a wealth of experience having taught as a full-time faculty member, then serving as a department head, and now as dean of instruction.  She has a genuine and caring attitude about what is best for the students, the faculty and the College overall.”

Peter Stone, program director for Marketing and Management, was chosen for the faculty category. The winning nomination stated, “Pete Stone has been a dedicated and loyal educator at SCC for 20 years. Foremost, Pete is an outstanding teacher, who goes to great lengths to serve his students in any way that is needed. He genuinely likes and cares about his students and he has the ability to bring out the best in his students, and develop their self-confidence and full potential.”

Karyn Stephens, administrative specialist for the Industrial and Engineering Technologies division, was chosen for the staff category. “Karyn does a fantastic job of keeping us all organized and on track. She assists us with registration and advising students, takes minutes at our meetings and subs for our department head when he is busy. She is persistent at reminding us when paper work is due. She also makes a mean cup of coffee, and always has candy available for us upon request,” wrote an anonymous nominator.

Award recipients will be recognized at the 2011 annual SCTEA conference in February in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The SCTEA was organized in 1974 to offer enrichment and professional development for individuals working in state institutions for technical education.
