SCDOT prepares roads and bridges for winter weather

SCDOT crews have prepped equipment and materials statewide. Crews in the areas of greatest threat continue pre-treating. Below is a summary of preparation activities.

 

District 1: Richland, Lexington, Sumter, Kershaw, Lee counties

All Midlands counties have equipment hooked up and loaded for immediate response if needed. Lexington and Richland counties could potentially bring in on-call crews late Sunday/early Monday morning as needed. Staff is evaluating conditions today for possible pretreating and crew activation.

District 2: Greenwood, Laurens, Anderson, Abbeville, McCormick, Saluda, Newberry, Edgefield counties

Crews will report to pre-treat with brine in Abbeville, Anderson, Greenwood, Laurens and Newberry counties on Sunday on all interstate routes , primary bridges, high volume secondary bridges and known trouble spots. A full night shift will start atmidnight Sunday in all 8 counties in District 2 to handle the mainly light sleet and freezing rain that is expected sometime aftermidnight. The weather is expected to turn to all rain by between 9:00-10:00 a.m. Monday morning with temps around 40 degrees and rain at lunchtime.No additional shifts are anticipated for this event after the first night shift.

District 3: Greenville/Spartanburg/Pickens/Oconee/Union counties

Pretreating of all roads began Sunday morning at 8:00 and will continue until complete; full staff are scheduled for 12 hour shifts starting at 9:00 p.m. tonight, adjusting as needed.

District 4: York/Chester/Lancaster/Fairfield/Chesterfield/Cherokee Counties.

District 4 continues pretreating in all counties this afternoon until dark. All roads have been treated and they are touching up areas along the interstates and primaries as well as other critical areas such as bridges and access to hospitals, etc. A full night shift will report at midnight tonight in all counties.

District 5: Florence, Darlington, Marlboro, Dillon, Marion, Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg counties

District 5 anticipates no frozen precipitation. On call crews will be activated if needed.Equipment and materials are ready in the count maintenance yards.

District 6: Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, Colleton, Beaufort, Jasper counties

District 6 is not expecting winter precipitation. However, trucks are loaded and equipment is ready to assist other regions of the state.

District 7: Orangeburg, Aiken, Calhoun, Clarendon, Bamberg, Barnwell, Allendale, Hampton counties

The county maintenance offices have dressed their equipment in preparation for inclement weather, but nothing is forecast at this time. District and local leadership will monitor closely over the weekend and activate personnel as needed.
