SCE&G Adjusts Natural Gas Rates Down for April

March 30, 2009

Average April bill down 24 percent from last year

COLUMBIA, SC – March 30,  2009 – SCE&G is adjusting the purchased gas portion of its natural gas rates for April, resulting in a decrease of $.40, or .82 percent, from March 2009 in overall costs to residential customers based on average usage for the month.  Compared to year ago levels, the average April bill will be about $14.89 less, or down almost 24 percent from last April.

Purchased-gas costs would account for about 50 percent of a residential customer’s overall gas bill.  The cost of gas purchased by SCE&G through its wholesale providers is passed on to customers without any markup.  SCE&G does not profit from this portion of its rates.

To help level out the impact on customers of price changes in the wholesale natural gas market, SCE&G makes monthly adjustments to natural gas rates based on a rolling 12-month forecast of purchased gas costs.  These adjustments are reviewed and approved by the South Carolina Office of Regulatory Staff and the Public Service Commission of South Carolina.

South Carolina Electric and Gas Company is a regulated public utility engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity to approximately 650,000 customers in 26 counties in the central, southern and southwestern portions of South Carolina.  The company also provides natural gas service to approximately 307,000 customers in 34 counties in the state.  More information about SCE&G is available at www.sceg.com.
