SCE&G provides generous support to Senior Resources’ programs

June 15, 2016

Senior Resources received a $15,000 grant from SCE&G to support the agency’s programs. The funding will be divided between the Meals on Wheels program and two annual fundraisers – the 2016 March for Meals 5K and the 2016 Every Senior Counts luncheon.

With a corps of more than 800 volunteers, the Meals on Wheels program delivers a hot, nutritious meal each day to clients’ homes. The nutritionally balanced meals provide one-third of the daily nutritional requirements for the homebound seniors.

“We currently have a waiting list of nearly 300 senior citizens and disabled adults who don’t know whether they will be able to maintain an adequate diet due to financial and transportation constraints,” said Pam Dukes, Executive Director of Senior Resources. “This generous gift from SCE&G will allow us to serve more hungry seniors in our community.”

The 2016 March for Meals 5K was held on February 27, 2016, at Timmerman Trail near the SCE&G headquarters. The 2016 Every Senior Counts luncheon is scheduled for November 3, 2016. Both annual fundraisers seek to raise funds for Meals on Wheels and other agency programs, and to raise awareness of the issue of senior hunger in our community.

According to the National Foundation to End Senior Hunger, South Carolina ranks eighth-worst in the nation for food instability among seniors. More than 18% of South Carolina’s elderly residents are threatened by hunger. Senior Resources is the only provider of Meals on Wheels in Richland County.

“SCE&G is proud to support such a worthwhile program that provides a hot meal and helps keep local senior citizens healthy and safe throughout the year,” said Stephanie Jones, supervisor of corporate philanthropy at SCANA. “We’re also proud of our employees who regularly volunteer to deliver meals as a part of the program.”
