SCFOR response to Governor McMaster’s Veto threat

April 4, 2017

President and CEO of the SC Alliance to Fix Our Roads Bill Ross issued the following statement in response to Governor McMaster’s letter published today regarding transportation funding. In the letter, Governor McMaster threatened to veto the pending roads bill and requested for the House of Representatives to redirect funds allocated in a bond bill towards road repair.

“Instead of supporting the House-passed, fiscally responsible, pay-as-you-go approach, Governor McMaster is advocating a Washington-style credit card spending plan,” said Bill Ross, President and CEO of the SC Alliance to Fix Our Roads. “It’s not a real plan to fix our roads and would only address a fraction of our state’s needs while continuing to place the entire cost on the people of South Carolina.”

“The Governor’s politically motivated proposal simply ignores the facts and needs of our state while undermining legislative leaders who have put forward a real plan to fix our dangerous roads,” said Ross. “We implore the Senate to follow the House’s lead by passing the pending roads bill immediately and overriding the Governor’s irresponsible veto threat if necessary.”

The South Carolina Alliance to Fix Our Roads is a non-partisan, non-profit, statewide organization made up of business leaders, associations, and chambers of commerce who believe that an efficient and safe highway system is essential to South Carolina’s continued economic growth and prosperity.
