School Resource Officer brings Prom Promise to Stratford High School

April 4, 2016

Stratford High School Resource Officer David Coffey is looking forward to educating Stratford students on the importance of safety during the week of April 4th-8th through the Prom Promise initiative. This initiative is a means to educate high school students on the dangers of drinking and driving and solicit student pledges not to drink and drive on prom night.

“When you are with these students every day, they become like your own children,” said School Resource Officer (SRO) Coffey. “I am always concerned with their safety and want to do whatever I can to ensure they have the information in front of them to make wise decisions. These students are important to me so I want them to recognize danger and take their safety seriously.”

SRO Coffey, with the support of school administration, has planned events throughout the week of April 4 to bring awareness to the dangers of drinking and driving. Beginning Monday, April 4, information about Prom Promise will be available to students in the cafeteria, and the school will promote the door decorating contest. Wednesday, April 6, junior and senior students will put on goggles that will simulate distorted, intoxicated vision. On Thursday, April 7, juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to drive the DUI golf cart course to help them understand impaired driving.

Coffey added, “When we are young, we tend to believe we are invincible. I hope my students understand that they are not invincible or replaceable. We, and their loved ones, value their lives and safety. I want them to know to call someone before driving a car after drinking or riding with someone who has been drinking.”

These safety tips are especially relevant and timely as Stratford prom is planned for Saturday, April 9.
