Science and Mathematics Governor’s School Partners With Time Warner Cable to Deliver STEM Camps Across South Carolina

June 29, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) received a $5,000 investment from Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds initiative to support the School’s satellite summer camps, iTEAMS Xtreme and CREATEng. Time Warner Cable employees are also volunteering their time and expertise with campers at the iTEAMS Xtreme camps.

iTEAMS Xtreme, a day camp, hosted in counties across South Carolina, is geared to inspire rising 7th & 8th graders to pursue careers in the fields of computer science, technology and entrepreneurship through hands-on, team-based projects. This year, thanks to the support of Time Warner Cable and other sponsors, GSSM is able to bring iTEAMS Xtreme to 13 communities across the Palmetto State during the months of June and July.

“We’ve had tremendous success in our Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) initiative to bring STEM awareness to young people through strategic partnerships like this one with the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics,” said Charlene Keys, area vice president of operations, Time Warner Cable. “The iTEAMS Xtreme program is a great way to continue to build on the momentum of CAMM to inspire the next generation of problem solvers and connect them to fun, interactive STEM opportunities.”

During iTEAMS Xtreme, students select to participate in one of the following challenges: developing mobile apps using App Inventor, printing 3D models using OpenSCAD, or creating an interactive object using Scratch and the MaKey MaKey invention kit.

Applications for iTEAMS Xtreme camps in Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester, Florence, Lexington, Spartanburg and York counties, are being accepted until June 30. Scholarships are available to cover the cost to attend, $185 per student, which includes instructional materials, daily snacks and a pizza party on the final day of camp. More information and the online application can be located at www.scgssm.org/iteams.

CREATEng is a one of a kind, four-day immersion into engineering and design-based thinking for rising 8th and 9th graders. Students learn innovative thinking techniques for solving practical problems while developing engineering skills through team-based, hands-on challenges such as designing blades for a wind turbine, constructing a parachute, or building a solar-powered s’mores cooker. They also have the opportunity to interact with engineers on-site and during field trips.

Applications for CREATEng camps in Greenville and Dorchester counties are being accepted until June 30. Scholarships are available to cover the cost to attend, $250 per student, which includes instructional materials, daily snacks and a pizza party on the final day of camp. More information and the online application can be located at www.scgssm.org/createng.

“Time Warner Cable, through their Connect a Million Minds initiative, is doing what it takes to inspire future generations with engaging experiences with STEM concepts,” said Kim Bowman, CEO, GSSM Foundation and EVP Strategic Direction, GSSM. “We are grateful for this investment from Time Warner Cable and their consistent support of our shared missions.”
