The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville is a newly-founded, four-year medical program of USC, and represents a partnership between the state’s largest University, USC, and the state’s largest public hospital, The Greenville Hospital System. Accepting the award on behalf of the school was Dr. Jerry R. Youkey, Dean of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville and Executive Vice President of Medical and Academic Affairs, Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center (GHS); Michael Riordan, President and Chief Executive Officer, Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center (GHS); and Dr. Harris Pastides, President, University of South Carolina.

The medical school is not a culmination of a dream, but rather the beginning of the dream, Dr. Youkey said. We are now dreaming of what the future will hold for the medical school, the Greenville Hospital System, and for the patients and communities we serve in the Upstate and beyond.

The event’s keynote address was be given by Dan DiMicco, Executive Chairman of Nucor Corporation. DiMicco, served as CEO of Nucor for more than twelve years, longer than anyone since company founder Ken Iverson. DiMicco shared his personal journey and the story of Nucor Corporation, as well as his dreams for the future of American manufacturing.

America didn’t become the nation it is by playing it safe. We had bold vision. Took decisive action. Made big investments, DiMicco said. We imagined what America could be and made it a reality. And that is the kind of vision the Townes Award celebrates.

The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville and Nucor Corporation are models of what can be achieved when people and companies come together with a shared vision and determination to accomplish something, says GSSM President Dr. Murray Brockman. We hope others in the state will be inspired to set their sights and dreams on a goal and keep on dreaming!
