Science & Math Governor’s School’s virtual engineering program expands with new program administrator

COLUMBIA, SC – The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) welcomed its newest employee, Gary Gabel.

Gabel joins GSSM as a Program Administrator for Accelerate, GSSM’s innovative virtual engineering program for 10th, 11th and 12th graders delivered in partnership with a select group of school districts across the state.

As program administrator, Gabel’s main duty will be to serve as a liaison between Accelerate and the participating districts, sites, schools and parents.

A graduate of Spring Valley High School in Columbia, South Carolina, Gabel has been working in academia for over 20 years. He has taught kindergarten through fifth grade and served as an administrator in middle school and elementary schools in Atlanta and Missouri.

He was a faculty member of the College of Education at Florida State University where he worked with college students and local school districts. Most recently, Gabel was a school administrator in Columbia, Missouri, and is in the process of completing his doctorate at the University of Missouri.

“I am so excited about the opportunity to join the Accelerate program and get back to South Carolina,” said Gabel. “If you want to make a tremendous impact on student success, you need to think outside the box and Accelerate and GSSM are leading the way.”

“We’re really delighted to have someone with Gary’s experience joining Accelerate and acting as the liaison between our partner schools and GSSM,” said Dr. Karen Den Braven, Director of GSSM Engineering Programs. “He understands the high school and public school culture, and having also worked at the university level, understands the importance of this program.”
