Shwedo to Remain Director of S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles

December 10, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC – Gov. Nikki Haley announced that Colonel Kevin Shwedo will continue serving in his role as the director of the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) during the second term. Appointed by Governor Haley in January of 2011, Director Shwedo’s focus on customer service has resulted in drastic improvements in the agency’s performance.

“Director Shwedo has brought a renewed sense of energy and urgency to the Department of Motor Vehicles over the past four years, and I know he is the right person to continue building on the many reforms he has implemented,” said Gov. Haley. “His focus on cutting wait times across the state, while improving customer service, has made a huge difference and I am excited to continue our strong partnership going into this second term.”

Recognizing a need for additional focus on the agency’s quality of service, Director Shwedo oversaw audits of every DMV office in the state in order to identify the best practices utilized by individual branches, and implemented those practices in offices throughout the state. This unique approach to problem solving and an emphasis on employee training have led to significant statewide decreases in wait times.

“I’m excited at the opportunity to continue serving Governor Haley and the citizens of South Carolina,” said Director Shwedo. “We’ve made a lot of progress in customer service and wait times, and I fully expect to continue to improve in those areas during the next four years.”

Prior to his appointment, Director Shwedo was the Deputy Commanding Officer of the United States Army Training Center at Fort Jackson, retiring from the military after 32 years of service.
