Six Lexington One Students Receive Governor’s School Awards

LEXINGTON, SC — Lexington Technology Center Students Will Allee, Dylan Blyth, Kyle Holsclaw Jr., McGowan Long, Karan Sah and Emma Weick participated in the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) Accelerate program during the 2013–2014 school year.

The Accelerate program offers a virtual engineering education to 10th-,11th- and 12th-grade students throughout the state in seven participating school districts. Lexington Technology Center serves as the host site for Lexington One students.

Throughout the year, students were recognized for showing qualities of good character using a “token economy.” Superlatives were awarded based on the number of tokens collected.

Allee received an award for displaying the most integrity and Blyth was recognized for having the most persistence. Holsclaw received a superlative for most self-control.  Most flexibility went to McGowan and Weick received a superlative for showing the most initiative.

Sah was recognized for having the most commitment and was also awarded “Best All-Around” for the Lexington Technology Center Accelerate site based on his grades, teamwork and tokens collected.

As a part of the program, students participate in virtual classes taught by GSSM faculty, Saturday experiences and summer camps. Accelerate students also participate in extracurricular activities designed to enhance engineering concepts with added emphasis on leadership, public speaking, communication and career planning.

During their third year in the program, students participate in industry internships. Through the Accelerate curriculum, students can earn up to 32 college credits towards an engineering degree.
