About the Carl Sandburg Home and National Student Poetry Contest

The legacy of Carl Sandburg is preserved and protected by the National Park Service, because he left a lasting impact on the nation with his writing. This year the NPS celebrates it’s 100th anniversary of protecting and preserving the stories and places of our nation, and leaving a legacy for future generations. We invited students to think about what Legacy means. What is worth remembering, preserving, protecting, sharing? Students wrote poems that expressed what in their life (i.e. family, a special place, a favorite toy or game, etc) is so special that they want to preserve and protect it for the future.
