Spartanburg Day School welcomes new faculty and staff for the 2011-2012 school year

SPARTANBURG, SC – August 25, 2011

Amanda Cox has been hired to teach second grade, has a BS degree in Elementary Education and is completing her Masters in early Childhood Education.  Prior to joining SDS, Mrs. Cox worked as an adjunct teacher at Spartanburg Community College.

Travis Burnham joins the SDS faculty to teach 7th and 8th Grade Science.  Mr. Burnham received a B.S. in Biology and Botany from the University of Maine in Orono, ME.  In his fourteen years of teaching, Mr. Burnham has taught classes internationally in Japan, Colombia, and the Northern Mariana Islands, in addition to the United States.

Sebastian Van Delden received his B.S., M.S., and PhD in Computer Science form University of Central Florida.   He has been hired to teach the 8th Grade Robotics Course at SDS, in addition to being Associate Professor of Computer Science at USC Upstate.

Beatrice Gougeon has moved from France to teach Middle and Upper School French classes and is Spartanburg Day School’s visiting Fulbright Fellow.  Madame Gougeon has a degree in Anthropology from from Universite Lumiere Lyon II and has taught for 13 years.

Jessi Moore has been hired to teach 5th Grade Science and Social Studies at SDS.  She received her B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of South Carolina.

Maureen MacMullan has a degree in History from St. Mary’s College, as well an M.A. in History from Villanova University.  She joins Spartanburg Day School’s faculty as an 8th Grade World History teacher.

Paige Phillips has been hired to teach  Algebra classes in the Upper School at Spartanburg Day School.  Mrs. Phillips has fifteen years of teaching experience and received her B.A. in Education from University of South Carolina Upstate.

Steve Jobe joins the SDS faculty to teach Upper School History.  A graduate of Wofford College in Economics, Mr. Jobe also holds an M.Ed in Secondary Social Studies and an M.L.A. in History from Converse College. Mr. Jobe has 16 years of teaching experience.

Barry Keith has been hired to serve as interim Athletic Director in addition to being the Varsity Baseball head coach.  Mr. Keith graduated form Ohio State University with a degree in Social work, and was a head varsity coach in Ohio for 11 years.

SDS has hired Ken Winslow to teach physical education in the lower and middle schools, in addition to being the Varsity Boys soccer head coach.  Mr. Winslow attended Catawba College and majored in Physical Education and Recreation.

Susan Owens joins Spartanburg Day School’s Upper School as a Geometry and AP Statistics teacher.   Mrs. Owens holds degrees from Clemson, University of Central Florida, University of South Carolina and University of North Carolina and is certified in Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, in addition to AP Calculus, and AB, AP Statistics.
