Spartanburg Water provides grant to SPACE

January 5, 2016

Spartanburg Water has provided a $10,000 grant to SPACE to support the implementation of a strategic plan to enhance water-based recreation.

The grant provides funds for the implementation of the Spartanburg County Blueways Master Plan, which aims to be a strategic plan for the continuance of “Reconnecting People to Rivers,” an initiative developed by Upstate Forever. A “blueway” or water trail is a water path that is developed with launch points, vehicle access and points of interest for canoeists, paddle boarders, kayakers and other forms of passive river recreation.

The Blueways Master Plan will focus on enhancing water-based passive recreation in all of Spartanburg County, including the Pacolet River Basin and throughout both the Spartanburg Water System and Sanitary Sewer District service areas. With an emphasis on river stewardship, conservation of river corridors and maintenance of both new and existing paddling access points, the Blueways Master Plan implementation will highlight the concepts of water quality and become an important community resource to a broad spectrum of the community.

“Spartanburg Water’s efforts to protect its source waters and watersheds are central to its mission,” said Sue Schneider, Chief Executive Officer of Spartanburg Water. “This effort will ensure a safe water supply for residents of the region for generations to come and help protect the natural beauty, ecological integrity, and quality of life in the region.”
