Retired and former Army Green Berets from S.C. Assist in fighting childhood obesity

CAMDEN, SC – The S.C. Chapter of the Special Forces Association presented a check in the amount of $1,200 to Global Eco Adventures for GEA’s Childhood Fitness through Environmental Training, better known as the GEA Adventure Club.

Aimed at eliminating childhood obesity, the GEA Adventure Club provides academic and applied knowledge of outdoor activities to adolescents (grades nine–12), reshaping their habits, priorities, and lifestyles. And the money from the retired and former U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers (aka Green Berets) will help fund the program going forward as GEA will lead its “Adventurers” – selected from among S.C. Middle Schools – along their six-month trek of classroom instruction and increasing-distance hikes throughout the Palmetto State.

“The men of Special Forces not only place great value on personal physical fitness, but they all have a great love and appreciation of nature and the outdoors,” says GEA founder and pres. Tom Mullikin, a former Army JAG officer who today serves as commander of the S.C. State Guard and is an Honorary Green Beret. “So SFA’s support of these young people and what we are doing here at GEA is simply a natural fit.”

The GEA ADVENTURE CLUB program will culminate in a graduation hike up Mt. Mitchell; at 6,684 feet, the highest summit on the east coast of the U.S.

The Special Forces Association (S.C. Chapter) is GEA’s tenth sponsor to date that includes the Congaree National Park, Sesquicentennial State Park, the Richland County Sheriff’s Dept., the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office, the Kershaw County School District, The Backpacker, Wade Culler Roofing, East Coast SpecialTees and the Mullikin Law Firm.
