Stewart and Steven Mungo honored as United Way Humanitarians of the Year

February 21, 2017

United Way of the Midlands will recognize Stewart and Steven Mungo as the 2016 Humanitarians of the Year award recipients at United Way’s annual Humanitarian of the Year Dinner and Award Ceremony on Feb. 23 at the University of South Carolina Alumni Center.

The Humanitarian of the Year Award is given each year to individuals who clearly demonstrate extraordinary leadership in philanthropic and human services. It is the highest single honor of philanthropic achievement in the Midlands.

Together, Stewart and Steven took over the company their late father, Michael, started in 1954 and built Mungo Homes into the recognized national leader in the home construction and land management business that it is today.  The company has since developed more than 25,000 home sites and was named America’s Best Builder in 2012 by Builder magazine, an award for overall excellence in new homebuilding.

Stewart and Steven credit their philanthropic efforts to their father, who was dedicated to giving back to the community. Before his death in 2010, Michael made arrangements for his entire estate to be left to his sons for the purpose of establishing a foundation in his name. Following in their father’s footsteps, Stewart and Steven have continued to impact their community.

“Stewart and Steven Mungo are pillars of our community both in business and philanthropy,” said Mac Bennett, United Way President and CEO.  “The Mungo family has made an impact on the Midlands in so many ways, it is wonderful to recognize their generous community commitment with our highest honor.”

Stewart and Steven are both graduates of Wofford College. Stewart graduated in 1974 with a degree in government while Steven completed his degree in political science in 1981. Stewart and his wife, Deloris, have two children and three grandchildren. Steven and his wife, Maria, have two children.

The black tie event will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $75 per person. Advanced registration is required at www.uway.org.
