Sustainable Midlands receives Dominion Foundation Award for Environmental Education

May 4, 2017

Sustainable Midlands is excited to have the opportunity to extend its Green LEAF program with the support of the Dominion Foundation. By engaging school staff and students around food-education, experiential environmental learning activities, cooking demonstrations, school gardening, and increasing their access to fresh produce our project will address the health issues associated with children experiencing limited access to fresh produce within schools that lack environmental education. This is essential for developing healthier communities that are more engaged in environmental stewardship and local food. Students more engaged in gardening and experiential environmental education have shown to be more successful in math and science, are more physically active and have increased efficacy in selecting healthier food options.

Keith Windle, General Manager for Dominion Carolina Gas Transmission, noted, “We are pleased to partner with Sustainable Midlands to support early childhood environmental education and wellness across the midlands.”

Executive Director Autumn Perkins added, “We value the support of the Dominion Foundation as we extend this program to include elementary schools in the Columbia area that need such programming. Through this grant Sustainable Midlands will provide school-garden development, nutrition curriculum for staff and students, experiential environmental education activities for the 2017-2018 school year.”
