The 90’s Are Back – And It’s All About Cher Horowitz

Since I remember the 90s very well, it is hard for me to think of them as a returning fashion trend.  Weren’t they just a few years ago?

No.  As hard as it is to believe, the 90s were over two decades ago, which brings them right back to the fashion forefront.  Luckily the decade had a little bit of everything, which means there is something for everyone.  Here is everything you need to know to embrace the new 90s so you aren’t Clueless:

1.    ‘As if!’  The 90s was a decade of slogans, and this spring you will see them printed on just about everything.  Words, phrases and entire sentences will be seen on tops, jackets, skirts and pants to bags, hats, and bracelets.  This season takes the idea of being outspoken to an entirely new level.

2.    Sheer.  Leaving nothing to the imagination, sheer pieces will be all the rage.  For the people who don’t want to show everything by wearing a sheer top or skirt, there is a way you can still embrace this trend, by using a sheer piece as a layer.  Whether you wear it over or under another piece really doesn’t matter.   It’s sheer after all and the effect is the same: creating a hazy, ethereal layer evoking romance while adding further dimension to your look.

3.    ‘It’s Calvin Klein.’  The iconic slip dress will return in full force this season, complete with sheer jackets and tops to match.  Minimalism was a huge trend in the 90s with clean lines and simple, relaxed silhouettes, and you can’t get much more simple than this dress.  Pick one up in any color or every color.  You can’t go wrong.

4.    Bold.  Who can forget Cher and Dionne’s coordinated plaid suits?  That same boldness of both color and pattern will be key this season.  Citrine colors just short of neon or bold prints and patterns will abound.  Guys you can’t escape this tend with printed pants and color blocked bomber and varsity jackets.

5.    Crop-top.  A hallmark of the 90s, midriffs will once again be on display this spring.  T-shirts are not the only things cropped this season.  Sweaters, jackets and even a reinvented twinset will all have your torso on display.   If you are still working into your swimsuit-ready body never fear.  This time around the crop-top comes in various lengths and styles so you can bare it all, or just give a glimpse.

One of the biggest cult classics to emerge from the 90s was Clueless, and to say it had an impact on the Spring Summer 2014 runways would be an understatement.  The influence was so pronounced that it the trend is being called “Clueless Nineties.”  There is even a twitter feed (@ModernClueless) reinterpreting the classic quotes and musings for modern times.  This season let out your inner Cher and Dionne.
