The Body Shape Series – Inverted Triangles

Since there have been some questions about the body shapes, I thought it would be fun to spend the next few weeks looking at each specific shape.  It is important to remember that these shapes are based on your proportions, not sizes, and are generalizations.  Also, like most classifications, you may not fit the shape exactly but you will be able to adapt the tips and techniques to fit your specific needs.

The first in the series is the Inverted Triangle.  This is a top-heavy shape that is also known as the swimmers build because your shoulders and chest are unquestionably the largest and/or widest parts of your body.  Other characteristics of this shape are a narrow, well-defined waist and narrow hips and bottom.

One of the style goals of this shape is to highlight your narrow waist and/or make it look smaller.  The best way to do that is by downplaying your upper body and filling out your lower body so they appear balanced.  Here are two inspiration boards and tips on how to do just that:

1.  The tops.  The types and styles of your tops are going to be very important.  Since you have broad shoulders and a large chest you want tops that have movement and work to soften and round out those edges.

This blouse has a couple of key points that make it ideal for an Inverted Triangle.

a.  The sloping, non-attached sleeve helps round your shoulders offering some movement.
b.  The V-neck is proportional, but not excessively wide or deep.  You want to keep the balance of your shoulders by making sure the opening hits about the middle of your shoulders.
c.  The volume of the shirt also helps soften your lines while the tie waist highlights your small waist.

The polo shirt is a great option for men because you can open the neckline and wear the shirt untucked, helping pull the eye downward to your waist.  Depending on the size of your arms you may want to look for unbanded sleeves.  Another tip is to wear lighter colors on top.  This visually lessens the impact of your torso.

2.  The bottoms.  Adding weight and volume to this area is the best way to balance your top and emphasize your waist.

There are a few ways to do that:

a.  Prints.  One way to add weight to an area is with prints, particularly small; repetitive ones.  They fill the space more fully than a solid color or stripe.
b.  Pleats.  Another trendy option to fill out the hips specifically.  Whether you choose defined, classic pleats or simple ripples created by an elastic waistband, a little extra fabric goes a long way here.
c.  Tapered Legs.  This is a great tool when you are wearing bottoms that are more fitted.  Anytime you bring something in at your knee or ankle you visually widen your hips and butt.

The Accessories.  Every item you wear should work to your advantage in some way.

Here is how these pieces work for an Inverted Triangle:

a.  Sunglasses.  A summer essential, you want to look for thinner frames with lighter lenses to keep the lightness theme.  If you opt for heavy, dark glasses you will be adding weight to your upper body instead of shifting it to your lower one.
b.  Earrings.  Use the same theory as sunglasses.  Keep them light, open and contrasting.  These are drop earrings, but they still feel airy.  Plus the straight lines are the perfect complement to the round pattern of the pants and pull out their subtle diamond pattern.
c.  Bracelets.  Short sleeves are great, but most of the time your arms are down by your side, so give us something to look at and create even more visual weight with a bracelet.  Rope bracelets are simple, easy and ideal for summer.
d.  Bags.  Cross-body bags are another tip for centering the visual weight around your hips and the strap bisecting your torso helps break it up as well.

These are basic, simple summer outfits, but they are clearly working to the advantage of the Inverted Triangle body shape.  Making sure your outfit works for you just takes a little practice and knowledge.
