The Gibbes Museum of Art Hosts Charleston Renaissance Symposium
January 8, 2012CHARLESTON, SC – The Gibbes Museum of Art will kick off the opening of the special exhibition The Art of Alfred Hutty: Woodstock to Charleston with a symposium on Friday, January 20, that both celebrates the renowned Charleston Renaissance artist and sheds light on this era of heightened creativity. The Charleston Renaissance, a period of time between the two world wars, was largely the creation of a small community of artists that played an important role in redefining Charleston’s cultural heritage.
The exhibition The Art of Alfred Hutty: Woodstock to Charleston will be on view in the Main Gallery of the Gibbes Museum of Art from January 20 through April 22 before traveling to the Greenville County (S.C.) Museum of Art and the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, Georgia. Rebirth, Refinement, and Rivalry: A Charleston Renaissance Symposium will feature the contributors of the newly published The Life and Art of Alfred Hutty as well as other scholars. The book and exhibition catalog is edited by Gibbes Curator of Collections Sara C. Arnold and Stephen G. Hoffius and features essays by Arnold, Alexis L. Boylan, Harlan Greene, and Edith Howle.
The symposium, held in the museum’s Garden Gallery and moderated by Gibbes Executive Director Angela D. Mack, will feature five speakers, a roundtable discussion of art collectors, and a book signing. Tickets are available for the morning and afternoon speaker sessions and the roundtable discussion. The book signing at 3pm is open to the public and does not require a ticket.
