Trident Technical College launches new Workforce Pathways Scholarship program

January 19, 2016

Trident Technical College’s Division of Continuing Education and Economic Development is offering a new Workforce Pathways Scholarship that will provide up to $2,000 per student per term for short-term training in select STEM-related career fields.

The Workforce Pathways Scholarship was funded by the S.C. General Assembly through the S.C. Technical College System. With $850,000 in funds available for Trident Tech students, the program has the potential to benefit hundreds of local residents who need workforce training to get a job or advance on the job.

The scholarship will cover the cost of course fees and textbooks for qualified TTC continuing education courses in the areas of health care, manufacturing, information technology, and transportation and logistics. A complete list of eligible courses can be found under Funding Opportunities on TTC’s Continuing Education website at www.tridenttech.edu/ce. Training available through the scholarship program will prepare students for career fields including medical coding, emergency medical technology, medical assisting, phlebotomy, web design, networking, welding, and advanced manufacturing.

“We are so excited to be able to offer this tremendous opportunity for students to train for a new career,” says Bob Walker, vice president of Continuing Education and Economic Development. “Frequently, the cost of continuing education programs can be challenging since our students do not qualify for traditional forms of financial aid and student loans.

This new scholarship program removes those barriers for so many people who would otherwise be unable to pursue continuing education in fields like health care, manufacturing, information technology, transportation and logistics.”

The scholarship is available for courses with a start date from now through June 30, 2016, until funds are expended. Term 1 courses have a start date from Jan. 1-April 30. Term 2 courses have a start date from May 1-June 30. Students may use their $2,000 on one or more courses within a term until the full scholarship amount has been expended. Students are responsible for paying for any additional costs beyond the $2,000 per term limit.

The scholarship program is only available for this six-month time period and is not expected to be offered again, as it is funded with nonrecurring money.

Scholarship eligibility is not based on financial need or previous academic performance. To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old, reside in South Carolina, and have a GED or high school diploma or provide college transcripts. Applicants must also provide a negative drug screen and a SLED or national background check free of felony convictions. Both the background check and drug screen must be acquired within three days of submitting the scholarship application.
