HARTSVILLE, SC – September 20, 2010 – Twitpic creator and Charleston transplant Noah Everett will share how a side project turned into a more than $1.5 million success story when he kicks off the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics’ (GSSM) new monthly SmartChat Speakers Series Sept. 20 in Hartsville.

In its inaugural year, this program strives to enhance the education of students while also inspiring them through the stories and experiences of some of the Palmetto State’s most promising leaders in technology, engineering, entrepreneurship, research and medicine.

Everett said the idea behind Twitpic was simple ─ create a way to share photos on Twitter. He single-handedly grew the site from inception to a service now used by more than 13 million users, including celebrities and politicians. Twitpic became a source for breaking news in early2009 after photos of the plane that crash-landed on the Hudson River appeared first on the site. Today, Twipic serves billions of requests every month.

Born in the South and raised in Oklahoma, Everett finished high school at 15 and taught himself the mechanics of the internet. Thisexperience, he said laid the groundwork for his later calling as a web developer.

SmartChat presentations will be held monthly at GSSM and will include speakers from a number of companies and organizations including Google, Savannah River Remediation and Clemson University.
