Two South Carolina school leaders receive top honors

Calhoun County School District Superintendent, Dr. Steve Wilson, has been named the 2017 South Carolina Superintendent of the Year, and District Five of Lexington & Richland Counties Chief Instructional Officer, Dr. Christina Melton, has been named District Level Administrator of the Year by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA).
“We are very pleased that Dr. Steve Wilson has been named South Carolina Superintendent of the Year,” said Calhoun County School District Chairman Gary B. Porth. “Dr. Wilson has been superintendent for us in Calhoun County since 2010 and our school district has fared very well under his leadership. Dr. Wilson came to us with a list of focus goals that are centered on teaching and learning. He has involved the community along with the schools to effect the very positive changes that have occurred in the Calhoun County Public Schools. The challenges have been many and Dr. Wilson is constantly striving to put our students first.”
He will compete for the 2017 National Superintendent of the Year award sponsored by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), Aramark, and VALIC. Elizabeth “Beth” A. Phibbs, Executive Director of SCASA, states, “Dr. Wilson is well respected in his community and among his peers. He is a longtime champion of children and remains a learner at heart by always finding ways to improve education for the children in Calhoun County. We are delighted that he has been chosen for this honor.”
Finalists for the award were Dr. Randall Dozier, Georgetown County Schools, Dr. Frank Morgan, Kershaw County School District, and Dr. W. Burke Royster, Greenville County Schools. Candidates participated in an application and interview process conducted by a team of South Carolina business, education, and community leaders.
Dr. Christina Melton, Chief Instructional Officer of District Five of Lexington & Richland Counties, was named the outstanding District Level Administrator of the Year by SCASA. Melton has been an advocate for education policy in the state and currently serves as the Past President of the SCASA Board.
Dr. Stephen Hefner, Superintendent of District Five of Lexington & Richland Counties states, “Dr. Melton has an extraordinary grasp of curriculum, instruction, and professional development and is recognized as a leader all across our state. She is most worthy of the honor of Administrator of the Year.”
Wilson & Melton will be recognized throughout the year for their accomplishments. Moseley Architects supports both awards by providing a scholarship to each winner to be used to assist a student or teacher with professional development or college courses.
SCASA is the professional organization for school leaders in South Carolina, with a membership of more than 4,000. From professional development opportunities and research, to publications and legislative advocacy, SCASA’s focus is to support school leaders in providing the best possible education for South Carolina’s young people. As a state affiliate of three national associations for school leaders, SCASA also works on the national level.
