Unsung Heroes recognized at Greenville Tech

January 21, 2016

Greenville Technical College recognized members of the community and the college who act unselfishly in service to others. This year, the Unsung Heroes awards event was held on January 19, 2016 with four categories of recognition: student, college faculty and staff, community member, and corporate representative.

Amiliz Miranda-Velez was the honoree in the student category. She is a Student Ambassador and work-study employee who assists with community events, education fairs, campus tours, Spanish translation and more.

Employees recognized were Susan Johnson, Julie Rosenau and James Williams.  Johnson is a math instructor who has assisted the students who apply for the Michelin Technical Scholars Program as they prepare for the two math tests required for entrance. Rosenau has been instrumental in the growth and success of the college’s Honors Program and helped to attract and plan the 2015 annual meeting of the Southern Regional Honors Council. Williams is a reading instructor who believes that teaching students to read can change lives and empower people, taking his teacher’s heart into a wide array of community activities including Big Brothers Big Sisters and Salvation Army.

Community honorees were Lt. Cheryl Cromartie and Charlie Hall. Cromartie is the first African American woman to ever serve as a lieutenant for the Greenville County Sheriff’s Department, a responsibility that means she commands 25 to 30 officers. Hall is the executive director of Upstate Warrior Solution, using his experience, understanding and dedication to help veterans in the Upstate lead happy, healthy lives.

The Corporate award recipient was Jeff Weaver, representing Michelin North America. Weaver works to recruit students for Michelin’s Technical Scholars Program, advocating for the best interest of the scholars at Michelin and at GTC. His efforts are changing students’ lives as he helps to shape the workforce of the future.

Entertainment at the event was provided by the Phillis Wheatley Dwight Woods Repertory Theater for Youth.
