UofSC Columbia campus closed through Friday, Oct. 7

October 5, 2016

In alignment with Richland County government, the University of South Carolina’s Columbia campus will be closed through Friday, Oct. 7 and all classes are canceled.

Only essential personnel should report on Thursday, Oct. 6 and Friday, Oct. 7.

As a state agency, the University follows the delay and closing determinations of Richland County government.

University officials are consulting with state and local officials as we continue to assess the situation for the rest of the week as the track of Hurricane Matthew becomes more defined. A decision regarding Saturday’s football game against the University of Georgia will be made later this week in consultation with state and local officials as well as the Southeastern Conference. The safety of all people and the minimization of impact on emergency personnel are the most important factors in this decision. Our goal is to keep this football game at Williams-Brice Stadium.

The University of South Carolina is encouraging students, faculty and staff to stay at home and stay off the roads as the evacuation of the state’s coastal region proceeds. Always obey all emergency personnel, signs, etc. Please take reasonable steps to ensure your safety and the safety of your family. At this time, the Columbia area is not included in the evacuation order and we do not anticipate a need for students to leave.

Services for students

USC is able to continue housing and feeding our on-campus population and to provide essential services to all students.

Whether you live on campus or off, the student activities and services page will help you remain comfortable and safe as South Carolina prepares for Hurricane Matthew.

Academics/Classes Update

The Thomas Cooper Library will remain open until 8 p.m.

The provost is working with deans, department chairs and faculty members to find flexible and creative ways to make up for lost classroom time. Students should be aware that work must be made up and be prepared to do so. It is the university’s intention to adhere to the planned academic calendar, including fall break.

For students who choose to leave Columbia

Whether you live on or off campus, if you decide to leave, the university strongly encourages you to tell your family where you are going. If you live on campus, see your RM (resident mentor) to check out before you leave.

As the evacuation of our coastal communities begins, and should weather and road conditions become hazardous, members of the Carolina family are encouraged to remain in Columbia and stay off the roads.
