USC Upstate Chancellor to be Honored at Chamber Annual Meeting

February 10, 2011

SPARTANBURG, SC – February 10, 2011 – Dr. John Stockwell, Chancellor of USC Upstate and former Chairman of the Spartanburg Chamber Board of Directors is to be honored at the Chamber’s Annual Meeting on Monday, February 28, 2011 at the Spartanburg Marriott.  The Annual Meeting, presented by Extended Stay Hotels, is the Chamber’s most prestigious event of the year, celebrating the many accomplishments of the Upstate business community.

I am very honored to receive this recognition, says Stockwell.  I do so with thanks to the 500 faculty and staff of USC Upstate who join me every day in committing their energies to the future of Spartanburg and the Upstate.

Since Stockwell’s arrival at USC Upstate in 1994, enrollments have doubled to 5,500 students with a campus community representing 60 nations and a minority enrollment of 30 percent.  Dr. John Stockwell is heralded for the implementation of a multi-year, $184 million master plan that has dramatically increased classroom space, academic support facilities, parking and streetscapes, housing, athletic and recreational facilities.

Stockwell is the founding chair of the Spartanburg chapter of the Urban League of the Upstate.  He is on the Board of Directors of the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce, serving as Chairman in 2009.  He chairs the Visions and Values committee of Ten at the Top, and also serves on the Boards of the Arts Partnership, the Community Indicators Project and The College Hub of Spartanburg County.

Earlier this year, Dr. Stockwell announced his plans to step down in August of 2011, following 17 years of leadership resulting in outstanding growth in the academic reputation, student enrollment, capital development and public/private partnerships of the campus.

I believe in Spartanburg, in its people and its future, in its entrepreneurial energy and its economic development potential, says Stockwell.  I also believe in the absolute necessity of higher education for greater numbers of our citizens; and, as I envision Spartanburg’s future growth, I cannot separate one from the other.
