SPARTANBURG, SC – The University of South Carolina Upstate is pleased to announce that the American Cancer Society (ACS) will hold the 2015 Relay For Life of Spartanburg event on its campus on Friday, May 15 from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Relay For Life of Spartanburg is the largest Relay for Life event in the Carolinas. As of April 15, 119 teams and 1,232 participants are registered to participate. Last year, more than 5,500 people participated in Spartanburg and raised nearly $400,000 to support the Society’s mission to finish the fight against cancer once and for all, making it the largest ACS Relay For Life event in the Carolinas.

“We can think of no greater honor than to welcome the Relay For Life participants to the USC Upstate campus and join them in the fight against cancer,” said Chancellor Tom Moore. “USC Upstate faculty, staff and students will be walking alongside cancer survivors, care givers, and those who have sadly lost loved ones to cancer.”

The Relay For Life program is a community-based event where teams and individuals set up campsites at a school, park or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team has at least one participant on the track at all times. Cancer survivors and caregivers take a celebratory first lap to start each event.

“The Relay For Life movement unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all,” said Sherrie Lee, Spartanburg volunteer Relay For Life event lead. “Many participants are our family, friends, and neighbors who have faced cancer themselves. Each new team that registers brings us one step closer to saving more lives.”

Teams and individuals can sign up for the Relay For Life event by visiting www.relayforlife.org/spartanburgsc or by calling 1-800-227-2345.
