Verizon supports GSSM’s ENGAGE after school and Saturday technology programs in Darlington County

September 6, 2016

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics Foundation has received a $15,000 investment from Verizon in support of the school’s tech-based after school and Saturday ENGAGE programs for middle school students in Darlington County.

ENGAGE is GSSM’s outreach initiative designed to impact 6-8th graders through early interest and awareness of STEM studies and careers.

All after school and Saturday ENGAGE programs will take place at Startsville: the GSSM Foundation’s Innovation Center located at 145 W. Carolina Street in downtown Hartsville.

“We are extremely grateful for Verizon’s continued support of GSSM and willingness to help us impact young learners across the Pee Dee,” said Kim Bowman, CEO, GSSM Foundation, and EVP Strategic Direction, GSSM. “Together, through ENGAGE, we hope to inspire a new generation of South Carolina leaders and innovators by jumpstarting their interest in STEM.”

GSSM’s after school ENGAGE will begin Monday, September 19, inviting three cohorts of 12 middle school students to explore the fascinating world of microcontrollers alongside GSSM residential student mentors. Snacks will be provided at each of the sessions.

Students can register online for the following:

  • Cohort One: Monday afternoons, 4-5:15 p.m., Sept. 19-Nov. 7
  • Cohort Two: Tuesday afternoons, 4-5:15 p.m., Sept. 20-Nov. 8
  • Cohort Three: Wednesday afternoons, 4-5:15 p.m. Sept. 21-Nov. 9 (Girls Only)

The after school ENGAGE programs will culminate with a showcase for families, partner schools and community members.

In spring of 2017, Saturday ENGAGE will pick back up with a program focused on project-based coding and 3-D printing. Students will participate in one of three Saturdays, March 4th, 11th, or 18th, from 9 a.m. to noon.

“Verizon is committed to doing all we can to engage students in STEM while encouraging them to pursue the STEM careers of the future.  We’re pleased to support the Governor’s School of Science and Math’s ENGAGE program as they seek to impact middle school students,” said Julie Smith, vice president of external affairs, Verizon.

ENGAGE is offered to students from Darlington, Lamar and Society Hill middle schools. Students will be enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis. Apply online at: http://www.scgssm.org/engage-hartsville.
