Vulcan “Quarry Crusher Run” will Challenge Runners during the 3rd Annual Race on April 26, 2014
April 26, 2014Quarry Crusher Run is the most unique race in the South Carolina
COLUMBIA, SC – April 26, 2014 – Due in large part to the support of Vulcan Materials, the Quarry Crusher Run is celebrating its third year and will once again challenge runners during one of the most unique races in the Southeast. On April 26 at 9:00 a.m., runners from all over South Carolina and beyond will test their training to climb the visually stunning 10% grade out of the quarry to the finish line. The 3.72 mile race winds through the historic Vulcan Quarry in Columbia and will reach a new depth of 427’ below the earth, a depth that increases each year.
In addition to the unique landscape, the severe physical challenge and the changing depth, the QCR is the only opportunity for the public to enter the Vulcan Quarry, which is closed to the public 364 days a year. Only those who sign up to run the race get the exclusive access and first-hand visuals of the incredible views.
“This race offers something so unique to Columbia,” said Jaime Lomas, Race Director “In a world of the same type of 5K every weekend and themed runs that aren’t challenging, it’s nice to be able to offer a truly different physical run that allows participants to feel a sense of accomplishment.”
New this year:
Beyond Running Training Program
A local Lexington, S.C. based running and fitness club, Beyond Running, has assembled a team of new participants with the goal of getting all of the members to the top of the quarry without walking. Beyond Running is the only partner training team of the race. For more information on Beyond Running’s training program, click here.
Press Preview and Rock Bottom Social – Tuesday April 15, 2014 – 6:00pm – 8:00pm
For the first year, Vulcan Materials and event organizers will invite media partners to enjoy a catered gathering on top of the Quarry. During this event, the trainees from Beyond Running will be allowed to run a mini-crusher run as an advantage for members of the group. Media opportunities include exclusive access to the quarry, interviews with trainees, golf cart videography rides and photo opportunities. Individual invitations will be mailed with details. Notable speakers will include Vulcan leaders and County Councilman Kelvin Washington. Catering will be provided by Scott Hall Catering and beverages provided by the Whig.
The QCR is held in conjunction with the Olympia Fest, a local festival celebrating the impact the historic Granby and Olympia mills had on the shaping of the city of Columbia. Olympia Fest starts at 10:00am following the QCR awards ceremony. The event is held on the green space in front of the Granby Mill and offers live music, arts and crafts vendors, local food vendors, quarry bus tours and family-friendly fun and activities. www.olympiafest.com
