“Wake up, little Smoothie, wake up!”

OK, that’s not exactly the way the Everly Brothers sang it, but you can hum it to yourself as you’re making this healthy shake that is great to wake up to.

Or hum Providence Hospitals’ new music video, which is all about getting healthier through smoothies: http://youtu.be/Laa0RyxE1oA.

This is the last of our full month of smoothie recipes, in celebration of National Nutrition Month. But keep them all handy, and enjoy them throughout the year!

Wake-Up Smoothie

1¼ cups orange juice, preferably calcium-fortified

1 banana

1¼ cups frozen berries, such as raspberries, blueberries and/or strawberries

½ cup low-fat silken tofu or Greek yogurt

1 tablespoon sugar or Splenda Granular (optional)

1 cup ice

Kay MacGinnis sigThis is another in a weekly series of healthy recipes from Kay MacInnis, registered dietitian at Providence Hospitals in Columbia.

Kay works in Health and Wellness at Providence, helping cardiac and diabetes patients eat their way to healthier lives. She’s not a chef herself, but in consultation with the actual chefs at Providence, she’s learned a lot over the years as she has worked to help patients help themselves after they leave the hospital.

She also conducts a number of health and wellness events for the public, including the monthly Providence Cooks! classes. The next class is Tuesday, March 3.
