Weekend Uniforms – It’s Not What You Think

For a lot of people the idea of a uniform is limiting, dated and anything but inspiring, but there is a new way to look at the idea of uniforms that is expansive.

Instead of looking at them in the singular, meaning one outfit that is repeated, think of it as a single sense of style.  That shift gives you the best of both worlds.  You have options beyond a set of repetitive pieces, but your look is consistent with all of your pieces working together in a uniform fashion.  Isn’t that what we all want?

Here are some of the most popular classic styles that are uniforms in their own right:

1.   All Black.  Deceptively simple, the key to pulling off this uniform is varying the texture and fabric in your outfit.  Wearing a single color head to toe may sound easy and somewhat lazy, but to do it well it actually takes thought and practice.  For fall and winter look at mixing leather accents with your wool, tweed, scuba and other woven fabrics.  It is the perfect blend and balance.

2.   Denim.  This is probably my favorite, especially since I seem to live in denim.  Fortunately that doesn’t just mean blue jeans.  Denim encompasses shirts, jackets and pants in all shades; colors and weights.  Denim-on-denim is a tricky trend that is often only adopted by the fashion forward, but everyone can do it.  Try working in a chambray layer with your jeans and you’re well on the way of a mixed denim outfit.

3.   Bold Colors.  This is definitely an ‘all in’ trend, but without some restraint this uniform could come across as a box of crayons instead of a chic, balanced outfit.  When you’re using bold, bright colors in every aspect of your outfit, you have to dial back the other embellishments and make sure the palette works together.  Keeping cuts classic and pieces simple are the best options.

4.   Layering.  This is not just a functional uniform, but also one of the most creative.  We all know how to layer tops, but how are you at layering bottoms?  The leggings-under-skirt-look is now being extended to actual pants under skirts and dresses, and don’t forget about blouses under dresses.  While I applaud the creativity and desire to build a unique look, I’m not sold on the universal acceptance of these looks.  They are best reserved for 20-somethings and students.  One layering option that works for everyone is layering your leather moto jacket under a wool topcoat.  It’s a new way to wear classic pieces in a modern way.

Don’t shy away from the thought of uniforms.  Instead, apply the concept to your wardrobe in a unique and clever way by broadening it to a general theme for your look.  Along with giving you a lens through which to view your closet it will give you direction as you build it.
