Williamson honored as State Employee of the Year by S.C. Association of Regional Councils of Government

February 9, 2016

The S.C. Association of Regional Councils of Government named James C. “Jimmie” Williamson, Ph.D., president of the SC Technical College System, as State Employee of the Year. Williamson was recognized for his exceptional support and commitment to education and workforce in South Carolina.

“I am honored to accept this award from the S.C. Association of Regional Councils of Government,” said Williamson. “I have always been a firm believer in the power of education. My experience in higher education coupled with my time spent in the private sector has given me a unique perspective on the true benefits of a technical college education for our state. Demand for a skilled workforce is ever-increasing, and as a System, we are committed to meeting that demand by ensuring a quality higher education remains affordable, accessible and relevant for the citizens of this great state.”

Each year the S.C. Association of Regional Councils of Government acknowledges the Legislator of the Year, State Employee of the Year, SCARC Project of the Year and Volunteer of the Year at their annual conference.

Launched more than four decades ago, South Carolina’s Councils of Governments offer regional programming and governmental services. Created by the state legislature in the late 1960s, their mission is to support local governments and develop effective partnerships that foster efficient transportation systems, economic and workforce development, and allow the state’s seniors to age in place. Today, there are 10 Councils of Governments (COGs) in South Carolina. Each represents a multi-county planning district. Each of the state’s 46 counties falls within a COG region.
